5:30am, four mornings a week. The city is quiet. The Broadwater is flat. There is a faint glow on the horizon where the sun is getting ready.
We launch from The Paddle House on the Spit. Shorter paddles head south past Sea World and Marina Mirage. The coffee run continues under the Sundale Bridge and through the Nerang River past Macintosh Island to Budds Beach in Surfers Paradise. For those who want it, the northern route takes you to Wave Break Island and the open ocean.
All levels from your first flatwater session to downwind ocean runs. The same crew, the same shed, the same Broadwater.
Saturday at 6:30am, the shed fills up. That particular organised chaos that only happens when 14 people who genuinely like each other are getting ready to do something together.
We paddle south from the Paddle House, past Sea World and Marina Mirage, under the Sundale Bridge and through the Nerang River past Macintosh Island to Bumbles at Budds Beach in Surfers Paradise.
Go-harder paddlers push the pace at the front. Casual groups find their rhythm in the middle. No one is rushed. The whole group arrives at Bumbles within a window.
Wednesday is the club’s technique day.
At 5:30am it’s the bay HIIT session — flat, protected water at the Paddle House, 45 minutes of intervals in a loop so every level can work at their own pace. Members call it the vom session. Optional and effective. Best after your first 4 to 6 sessions.
At 4:00pm, a balanced afternoon session — conditions-dependent, unhurried, and one of the best entry points on the calendar for newcomers who aren’t ready for a 5:30am start.
Once a month we run a timed paddle on a set course around Wave Break Island. Race yourself, not each other. Results go into Strava. Watching your times drop over the months is genuinely addictive — the kind of quiet progress that keeps people coming back.
All levels welcome. If you can do the Saturday coffee paddle, you can do the time trial.
